Job Description:

reports to our Associate Chief Nurse supporting our ED and Critical
Care areas. The Extracorporeal Oxygenation (ECMO) Program Clinical
Manager works collaboratively with interventional cardiology,
cardiothoracic surgery, critical care education & leadership teams,
as well as the perfusion team to coordinate, educate, and support
frontline staff in the provision of care that is in accordance with
the rules, regulations and/or standards established by the State of
Massachusetts, The Joint Commission, and appropriate specialty
organizations relevant to the patient population receiving ECMO as
a treatment modality. Additionally, the ECMO-PCM should understand
and be able to teach how other treatment modalities such as
Impella, Tandem Heart, Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT),
Intra-aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) and any other that may be utilized
in conjunction with ECMO, including functionality and its effects
on a patient receiving these modalities concurrently when receiving
ECMO.Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited
to:Clinical Management
- Serves as a leader and partner in the interdisciplinary health
care team. Demonstrates excellent collaboration and communication
skills with all members of the healthcare team serving to bridge
gaps in knowledge, perceptions, and understanding. Provides direct
patient care as needed, maintaining competencies required to
provide care to critically ill patients at LHMC as defined by the
CC leadership and education teams. Maintains the ability to perform
in the ECMO Specialist role as identified by LHMC guidelines
including pump time. Provides clinical expertise and supervision
for patients being supported by ECMO. This will include but not be
limited to collaboration and discussion with the patients' primary
care team, frontline staff at the bedside, as well as indirect
supervision and support as needed. Participates in cannulation of
mechanical support devices when possible. Maintains detailed
knowledge of all patients receiving ECMO as a treatment modality.
Assists with and/or coordinates care during all phases of care
provision as needed which includes cannulation, daily care,
de-cannulation, intra/inter-hospital travel etc. Responsible for
promoting cost effective care through coordination of human,
environmental, and material resources.
- Develops and facilitates processes to foster information
sharing between the patient/family and the interdisciplinary
healthcare team. Ensures consistent processes in place to ensure
patients and families are well informed and are included in care
planning. Provides and/or oversees the provision of education to
the patient and family regarding treatments, support devices as
needed.
- Collaborates with team leads and critical care educator(s) to
identify, develop, and provide learning opportunities and education
for clinical staff. Validate staff competencies and ensure
successful completion of related education. Works with device
representatives/educators to develop and ensure education and use
of equipment is in alignment with indications for use.
- Exercises sound judgment and assessment skills with initial
intervention and throughout the treatment/support cycle to obtain
optimum outcomes.
- Collaborates with appropriate leadership, biomed, and risk
teams to ensure any and all safety issues are investigated,
assisting with mitigation, education, or any additional appropriate
responses needed.
- Remains up to date with the latest research to ensure that
protocols, processes, and care provided are in alignment with
current best practice. Attends appropriate conferences and learning
opportunities translating up-to-date evidence into practice.
- Maintains proficiency as an Adult ECMO Specialist by meeting
the program requirements and maintaining clinical hours as required
by their certification.Clinical Information Management
- Utilizes the electronic health record (EHR) and other
information systems and technology to review and improve health
care outcomes. Participates in development of order sets and/or
protocols including documentation requirements to support the safe
up-to-date delivery of care. Participates in processes to ensure
appropriate care and supporting EHR documentation are in alignment
with policies, guidelines, and expectations. Manages data analysis
and entry into the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO)
database for all ECMO runs.
- Performs clinical review of all ECMO cases, providing feedback
to care teams. Participates in any morbidity and mortality
conferences.
- Develops, reviews, and updates ECMO program policies,
guidelines, and quality measures in coordination with the
appropriate stakeholders. Assists with managing reporting outcomes
and participates in and/or updates appropriate committees as needed
such as but not limited to Quality and Safety, Infection
Prevention, ECMO, and Critical Care.
- Leadership and Professional Development
- Functions as an extension of the critical care leadership team,
demonstrating effective communication, collaboration, and coaching
skills. Consistently promotes an environment that supports
inter-professional inquiry, clinical research, innovation,
performance improvement and problem solving.
- Models behavior that is in alignment with the behavior
guidelines and guiding principles: Respect, Caring, Teamwork, and
Excellence/Integrity. Maintains strict adherence to the Lahey
Hospital Confidentiality policy, guiding principles, and other
organizational and regulatory policies and guidelines.
- Creates opportunities for mentoring staff and supporting
professional development and advanced specialty certification
(Adult Certified ECMO Specialist CES-A). Supports and participates
in appropriate professional associations; ie ELSO, AACN etc.
Follows emerging trends in critical care, and appropriate
subspecialties by reading peer reviewed journal articles as well as
participation or attendance at international, national, or regional
conferences. Serves a role model for lifelong learning.
- Performs all other duties assigned, as needed or directed to
meet the needs of our patient population.Minimum
Qualifications:Education: Bachelor's degree of Science in
NursingLicensure, Certification, Registration:
- Massachusetts License as a Registered Nurse
- ACLS Required
- CES-A Certification RequiredSkills, Knowledge & Abilities:
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Working knowledge of PC's able to use or learn commonly used
applications including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to impart specialized clinical and medical information
to families and other members of the health care team.
- Experience:
- Positive and proactive involvement with leadership in an
equivalent supervisory capacity. Minimum of 3 years critical care
experience as an RN.Key Relationships:
- Manager of CCU: Provides department oversight, provides
oversight of quality/process improvements, general and fiscal
operations collaborates, mentors, assists ,with orientation and
continuing education receives input on competencies, scheduling,
workflow
- ECMO Medical Directors and oversight committee(s): Collaborates
to ensure up-to-date policies and practices, as well as training,
performance improvement, and regulatory requirements are met
