Job Description Job Description Summary: The Criminal Court
program provides a safe reception center and various services to
assist survivors and victims of crime navigate through the Criminal
Court. The program provides counseling, crisis intervention, case
management services, advocacy, information and referrals and
practical assistance to survivors and victims of crime with an
overall goal of promoting survivor safety and reducing the impact
of victimization. The Coordinator is responsible for providing
holistic support services to victims of all crimes. This included
counseling and crisis intervention to assess the needs of victims
and to help with the development of safety plans to address
immediate risks and concerns. This plan may include the provision
of in-person or telephone counseling; emergency assistance such as
money for transportation; assistance with an Office of Victim
Services (OVS) application; providing information and referrals,
and follow-up services; and providing assistance with obtaining an
order of protection, restitution, and other criminal justice
remedies. The Coordinator will advocate on the client’s behalf with
public entitlement programs, schools, employers, civil legal
attorneys, and other community-based organizations, and coordinate
and collaborate with the OVS Vocational Rehabilitation Unit and the
New York Civil Legal Network to ensure that victims are receiving a
comprehensive response. The Coordinator will also assist clients
with applying for a New York City Housing Authority emergency
housing transfer as an intimidated victim or victim of domestic
violence; provide assistance, information and support to clients
around securing safe, appropriate housing through available
subsidies; or access other available resources in the City that
suit the individual’s needs to help maintain housing stability in
their current residence. Additionally, the Coordinator will assist
clients with direct services such as registering for Victim
Information Notification Everyday (VINE) and SAVIN (Statewide
Automated Victim Information and Notification Network); making
referrals for shelter stay; assisting with relocation; and
referring for lock replacement. Responsibilities: · Learn and
integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an
anti-oppressive lens, into your work with clients. · Provide case
management services, counseling, and crisis intervention to victims
and survivors of crime; · Provide court orientation, criminal
justice advocacy, accompaniment and support; · Conduct
client-centered safety assessments and prepare risk management
plans; · Coordinate and collaborate with the OVS Vocational
Rehabilitation Unit and the New York Civil Legal Network to ensure
that victims are receiving a comprehensive response; · Assist in
the determination of clients’ eligibility for government-financed
housing programs; · Identify, obtain, and assist documents needed
for applications for housing; · Identify and maintain resources of
key individuals in various agencies (HRA, NYCHA, HPD) to facilitate
permanent housing application process; · Provide support to Safe
Horizon staff on financial assistance, housing, and public
benefits; · Provide emergency practical assistance including
transportation, food vouchers, financial assistance, emergency cell
phones, and lock replacement; · Provide information and referrals
for services such as shelters, long-term counseling, public
assistance and other entitlements, and assistance with OVS
applications; · Advocate on behalf of clients with the District
Attorney’s office, family and criminal court personnel and judges,
NYPD, NYCHA and other subsidized housing, employers, schools and
other social service agencies; · Participate in staff meetings,
relevant trainings and workshops; · Perform data entry into a
computerized record keeping system; and · Various other duties to
be determine by supervisor Interacts with: · Kings County District
Attorney’s Office · Kings County Criminal Court personnel (court
clerks, court officers, etc.) · Kings County Family Court and
integrated Domestic Violence Court personnel · Family Justice
Center staff · NYPD · NYCHA and Section 8 staff · OVS · Local
social service providers · Other Safe Horizon staff Qualifications:
· Experience working with survivors of domestic violence and other
victims of crime; · Experience with the criminal justice system; ·
A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience Knowledge and Skills:
Required: · Sensitivity towards and understanding of victimization,
especially the experience of survivors of domestic violence; ·
Strong communication and organizational skills; · Ability to work
under pressure in a calm and reassuring manner. · Ability to
generate own tasks and develop creative solutions to problems. If
